Patient Care Technician - Diagnostic Imaging

Position Summary

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) in the Diagnostic Imaging Department provides direct patient care services under the direction of a registered nurse. This role directly impacts patient comfort, safety, and the overall quality of care delivered.

Location / Shift / hours: Houston Medical Center / 10 hour shifts / Monday - Friday: 10am - 830pm / Saturday rotation: 630am - 5pm

The ideal candidate will have one year of patient care experience in a hospital setting.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care & Support
  • Assist with routine and advanced patient care activities as delegated by nursing staff.
  • Support patients with activities of daily living, mobilization, and vital signs.
  • Encourage patient independence and progression toward wellness.
  • Assist with admissions, discharges, and transportation to and from perioperative areas.
  • Remove peripheral IVs and provide nourishment as directed.
  • Empty drains, Foley catheters, and assist with personal belongings.
  • Ensure patient comfort by keeping call lights, bedside tables, and phones accessible.

Collaboration & Communication
  • Recognize and report changes in patient condition promptly.
  • Escalate safety concerns to charge nurse or leadership.
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to address patient needs.
  • Participate in peer evaluations and demonstrate superior customer service.
  • Always identify patients according to institutional policy.

Environment of Care
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment.
  • Clean and disinfect equipment such as monitors, stretchers, and wheelchairs.
  • Manage supplies including linens, SCDs, pillows, and inventory auditing.
  • Properly discard disposable equipment and materials.

Technology & Documentation
  • Document care in the electronic health record accurately.
  • Utilize computer systems to access and enter patient information.
  • Handle and transport laboratory specimens safely and promptly.
  • Comply with required training, competencies, and regulatory standards.

Professional Development
  • Participate in unit-based improvement projects.
  • Attend educational events and complete competency validations.
  • Review institutional communications and maintain accountability for continued learning.

Additional Duties
  • Apply aseptic technique and safety principles consistently.
  • Identify barriers to patient care and collaborate on solutions.
  • Other duties as assigned.
