Laboratory Technician - Cytogenetics - Tues - Sat - Mid-Shift

The Cytogenetics Laboratory at MD Anderson Cancer Center plays a vital role in the diagnosis, classification, and monitoring of hematologic malignancies and solid tumors through chromosomal analysis and molecular cytogenetic testing. Operating in a high-complexity clinical environment, the department relies on precise specimen handling, detailed documentation, and strict adherence to quality standards to ensure accurate and clinically meaningful results.

As a Laboratory Technician in Cytogenetics, you will perform assigned laboratory tasks in accordance with established policies and procedures, ensuring proper receipt, accessioning, processing, and identification of patient specimens. You will evaluate specimen integrity, recognize and report unacceptable specimens according to departmental guidelines, and maintain accurate documentation to support downstream cytogenetic analysis.

In this role, you will assist in pre-analytical and technical processes that support chromosome analysis, including specimen preparation, culture setup support, slide handling, and other laboratory workflows specific to cytogenetic testing. You will maintain proficiency in laboratory computer systems, accurately enter specimen data, and ensure thorough documentation of quality control and quality assurance activities. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills are essential, as your work directly supports complex diagnostic testing and reporting.

You will prioritize and organize workflow to meet productivity goals, remain knowledgeable of laboratory processes to assist with troubleshooting, and support inventory monitoring to ensure the effective use of reagents and supplies. Maintaining neat, accurate, and complete records is critical to regulatory compliance and laboratory efficiency.

Professionalism and customer service are key components of this position. You will communicate courteously with internal and external stakeholders, report problem resolutions in accordance with policy, and demonstrate cooperation and composure in fast-paced or high-volume situations. Your ability to remain calm and responsive during operational challenges contributes to a positive and collaborative laboratory environment.

Additionally, you may assist with training new personnel and students by sharing knowledge of cytogenetics laboratory techniques and processes, supporting team development and continuity of operations.

**The hours for this position are Tuesday - Saturday 1pm - 9:30pm. The ideal candidate will have a bachelors degree in a science related field.**

Required:

Work Experience

• 1 year in a clinical medical laboratory or similar setting OR
• No experience required with preferred degree
