Clinical Investigation Technician (Certified Phlebotomist) - Breast Medical Oncology

Seeking an experienced Phlebotomy Technician to join our team in Breast Medical Oncology. This department seeks to improve the survival of breast cancer patients, provide new knowledge through research, patient-centered clinical care, cancer prevention, and education and outreach with the ultimate goal of eliminating breast cancer.

The ideal candidate is a certified phlebotomist with at least three years of hands on lab experience. Will thrive in a fast paced clinical environment and bring strong attention to detail. EKG and shipping experience are a plus. Must have the flexibility to work a 10:30am - 7pm schedule.

KEY FUNCTIONS
Coordinates departmental efforts to identify potential patients in the clinics and on the in-patient floors:
• Draw blood samples and retrieve lab and/or tissue samples from Diagnostic Laboratory and other hospital locations as required per protocol.
• Obtains EKGs and transmits to the sponsor daily.
• Coordinates scheduling of baseline and follow -up research laboratory draws in the Breast Center Lab and provides daily schedule.
• Responsible for collection, cataloging, distribution and freezer storage of laboratory and tissue specimens for clinical protocols and projects.
• Responsible for obtaining tissue located at MDACC or offsite and sending these samples out to the sponsors or inside laboratories.

Ensures prompt retrieval and processing of blood specimens as required by protocol:
• Packages samples for shipping, identifies appropriate carrier, arranges for shipping, and handles dry ice.
• Coordinates and participates in recording shipments to sponsor drug companies.
• Has all EKG machines checked by Biomedical Engineering and assures all EKG machines are tagged for use.
• Performs test EKGs on all machines as they arrive on the unit.

Provides accurate data entry into Oncore or other databases as required per protocol:
• This may include clinical trial registration, data regarding blood and tissue samples and patient-related clinical and follow-up information.
• Updates and maintains databases and tiles necessary to the collection of specimen- and patient-related research data.
• Retrieves data on sample status as requested.

Coordinates and performs routine laboratory maintenance functions:
• Responsible for maintenance of accurate daily temperature logs for BMO Lab freezers and refrigerators.
• Complies with Monitoring Service procedures in case of malfunction.
• Performs ongoing inventory and assists with ordering necessary BMO Lab research supplies, including dry ice.
• Assists with budget preparation for clinical research laboratory studies as requested.

Provides ongoing communication to the study managers and supervisors of lab queries resolution:
• Communicates any late samples with explanation.
• Maintains contact with other departments such as ATC as to location of the patients and coordinates times for procedures needed.

EDUCATION
  • Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent

WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Required: 3 years Phlebotomy experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for up to two years of the required experience on a one to one basis.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Preferred: CPT - Phlebotomy Technician Certification American Society of Clinical Pathologist Board of Registry (BOR) or American Certification Agency (ACA). Upon Hire
