Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) - Melanoma Medical Oncology

The Department of Melanoma Medical Oncology, at MD Anderson Cancer Center, is seeking a Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse to join our team in providing outstanding care to patients with melanoma. Our mission is to develop better therapies for melanoma, and other cancers, by applying the latest findings in laboratory studies to the clinical setting.

The ideal candidate is a Physician Assistant (PA) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with a strong preference for oncology experience. This role is primarily outpatient, with occasional inpatient coverage, requiring someone who is a team player, demonstrates a strong work ethic, and is flexible in adapting to changing needs. The candidate should excel at multi-tasking in a fast-paced clinic or inpatient setting, maintain high accountability, and deliver exceptional patient care while collaborating effectively with the healthcare team.

This position is primarily outpatient but may also float to inpatient. Schedule: Monday - Friday (hours are variable but average 8am - 5pm)

KEY FUNCTIONS
Clinical Activities
• Perform inpatient and outpatient evaluations, rounds, and manage daily patient issues and emergencies.
• Complete required documentation (H&P, progress notes, discharge summaries) per institutional guidelines.
• Coordinate admissions, discharges, hospice referrals, and schedule procedures.
• Order medications, treatments, and tests within delegated authority.
• Perform procedures (e.g., biopsies, lumbar punctures, venipuncture, intratumoral injections).
• Communicate and collaborate with other services, caregivers, and outside providers for patient care.
Research & Education
• Assist research team with protocol-related events, patient eligibility, and data collection.
• Monitor and assess patients for symptoms, side effects, and toxicities related to standard and investigational treatments.
Administrative Responsibilities
• Complete patient-related paperwork (letters, FMLA, insurance forms) and facilitate insurance authorizations.
• Handle billing within 24 hours using the Electronic Billing System.
• Attend departmental meetings and CME courses for licensure and specialty education.
Compliance & Professional Standards
• Adhere to institutional, state, and federal regulations regarding prescriptive authority and delegation.
• Maintain excellent oral and written communication skills and uphold high standards of accountability.

EDUCATION
Required:
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse
• Master's Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice. May be waived for applicants who obtained recognition as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003.
• Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.
Physician Assistant
• Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), except for Physician Assistants who graduated from a PA program prior to 2013.

EXPERIENCE
Preferred:
• At least 1 year of experience in Advanced Practice Provider role.
• Prior Oncology experience.

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION
Required:
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse
All of the following:
• Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN or ACNP or ACNPC or ACAGNP or AGACNP or ACNPC-AG or AGACNP or AGNP or ACPNP or ANP or AGNP or AGPCNP or FNP or GNP or PNP or PMHNP or WHNP or APNP). Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.
• Basic Life Support (BLS). Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) If working in the following departments: Pediatric - Patient Care (113100).
• MAY BE REQUIRED: Authorization for limited prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing.
Physician Assistant
All of the following:
• PA certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants.
• Licensed by the Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners.
• MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas.
• Must meet the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) , ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) if working in one of following department: Pediatrics - Patient Care (113100).
