JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Laboratory Skills
The Research Assistant II is responsible for the daily organization and associated duties of working with and maintaining tumor sample analyses, managing patient-derived xenograft models, and handling human and animal tissue samples. Interaction with the lymphoma tissue bank to obtain patient blood and/or tumor samples may be required. The work also involves handling animals and animal protocols. The individual must maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records, including tracking of animal colonies. Attention to detail and alertness must be maintained at all times. This role involves coordinating and conducting experiments and research projects in varied areas of chemistry, biology, physics, and other biomedical or related basic science fields. The individual will construct, assemble, and operate laboratory apparatus and equipment. Reading literature and consulting with superiors regarding new procedures and modifying them according to project needs is necessary. The Research Assistant will also record and evaluate data obtained in accordance with prescribed methods.

Molecular and Cellular Biology
The Research Assistant will perform laboratory work in molecular and cellular biology, including but not limited to DNA preparation, RNA extraction, PCR, flow cytometry, tissue processing, proliferation and cytotoxicity assays, tissue culture (animal and human), and magnetic cell separation. The role requires manual dexterity for pipetting tasks, as well as visual acuity to manipulate very small quantities. The individual must work independently to ensure that samples are obtained and processed in a timely and consistent manner. This requires a thorough understanding of the methodology, the ability to troubleshoot problems independently, and the awareness to seek help when needed. Work will involve handling materials under BL-2 safety conditions.

Reporting
The candidate must fully understand the research projects and comprehend relevant scientific literature. They should also be able to introduce new methods to the laboratory when available. The Research Assistant will be required to present findings to small groups of scientists. They must maintain thorough, accurate, legible, and organized handwritten and electronic records of all experiments. Strong oral and written communication, as well as interpersonal skills, are essential for this role. The individual must be able to work effectively with all employees.

Education Required - Bachelor's degree with major course works in one of the basic sciences.

Experience Required - One year experience in scientific or experimental research work. No experience required with preferred degree.

Experience Preferred - Experience with mice would be ideal
