Research Laboratory Manager - Lozano Lab

SUMMARY

Function: Applies technical expertise, management skills, computational skills, and business knowledge to manage the general laboratory operations of the Lozano laboratory.

Scope: Impacts all aspects of running the Lozano laboratory, managing the animal colony, and clinical collaborations throughout the institute

The ideal candidate will have a Master's or PhD and superb technical and experimental skills.

KEY FUNCTIONS

The successful candidate will manage the laboratory and will be responsible for performing experiments as needed to facilitate publication of studies. Key functions include:

· Manages the animal facility for the Lozano lab and maintains a small cohort of mice for

a) experiments

b) providing to lab mates when needed

c) filling requests for our animals from other PIs (inside and outside of MD Anderson)

· Genotypes mice and use them for experiments when needed.

· Sets up new experiments as new projects arise/take initiative in suggesting experiments. The following skills are required.

a) DNA, RNA and protein preparation

b) Real-time PCR

c) Western blot

d) IHC staining

e) Cell culture, making MEFs

· Manages MTAs and animal protocols. Prepare for semi-annual IACUC inspections. Coordinate with Ved Med to prepare for animal imports and exports.

· Familiar with eGlobal Shipping. Prepare all shipping packages for lab.

· Annotates and organizes tissue samples in -80C freezers, and cell lines in liquid nitrogen tank.

· Places all orders for lab reagents and supplies, research animals and mouse room cage-cards.

· Oversees supply and equipment inventory, tracks expenses.

· Uses laboratory knowledge and expertise to identify and resolve research laboratory operational issues and interacts with others to resolve problems.

· Assists graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in the laboratory on their projects.

· Maintains all laboratory equipment.

· Works with laboratory safety officer to ensure compliance with state/federal and institutional guidelines in the storage, use and disposal of materials. Prepares annual EH&S safety inspection.

· Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

Required: Bachelor's degree.

Preferred: Master's degree

EXPERIENCE

Required: Seven years experience in scientific, research or clinical laboratory, to include four years in a supervisory/managerial capacity. With preferred degree, five years of required experience to include four years in a supervisory/managerial capacity. Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate and/or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience. Completion of both programs can be substituted for a maximum of two years of supervisory or management experience.
