Research Investigator

KEY FUNCTIONS

Develop and Test New Procedures
a. Analysis of current literature and existing procedures as a rational basis for the design of new laboratory procedures.
b. Development and testing of existing and new laboratory procedures to achieve research objectives.
c. Must have extensive experience with molecular biology, cell biology, and immunobiology techniques.
d. Independently research and design a project.
e. Perform high quality research that is publishable.

Communication of Scientific Data
a. Maintenance of complete and up-to-date electronic laboratory notebook of all laboratory databases and basic cancer research projects.
b. Communication of research findings at weekly laboratory meetings and other meetings.
c. Assists the principal investigator in the preparation and submission of manuscripts and grants summarizing research data.

Safety and Regulatory Compliance / General Laboratory Duties
a. Supervises the handling of chemically hazardous materials, and biohazardous materials in procedures specified to meet MDACC safety guidelines.
b. Oversees maintenance of hazardous chemical inventory.
c. Ensures all personnel receive all institutionally mandated training and laboratory safety training.
d. Responsible for shipping of biohazard and infectious material per MDACC regulations.
e. Ensures that laboratory is prepared for isotope inspections and safety accreditation.
f. Supervises the overall appearance, maintenance and proper use of all laboratories and equipment.
g. Training and assisting laboratory personnel with performance of various laboratory procedures and the use of laboratory equipment.
h. Maintenance of laboratory equipment and helping with general lab duties, including ordering laboratory supplies and equipment.

Manages the Department Cell Line Bank

a. Manages the storage and dispensing of all cell lines.

b. Ensures the cell lines are free from Mycoplasma-ongoing testing.

c. Processes all MTAs to include shipping via eShipGlobal following institutional guidelines and procedures.

d. Manages Invoice preparation.

Administrative Operations

Laboratory Safety and Operations

· Work with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) to keep Dr. Myers' lab with all policies and procedures.

· Monitor training compliance by compiling completion certificates for:

a. Safety in a Lab environment (EHS0288).

b. Control Band Training.

c. Radiation Safety training (RAD), if applicable.

d. Virus training, if applicable.

e. Animal training, if applicable.

f. Hazardous shipping, if applicable.

· Plan and ensures that appropriate training of lab personnel is conducted with respect to proper laboratory techniques, use of laboratory equipment, supplies and safety procedures.

· Demonstrate and practices general lab safety precautions. Provides verbal and/or written instructions to lab personnel on standard and specialized laboratory procedure.

· Ensure all laboratory personnel are compliant with handling of hazardous and biohazardous material to meet MDACC safety guidelines.

· Consult with EHS personnel concerning safety procedures required for installation, usage, and removal of equipment. Set up safety seal requests.

Inventory Control

· Co-ordinate, performs and reconciles annual inventory of research equipment.

· Arrange asset transfers to warehouse and within the institution.

· Verify any purchase that includes trade ins or exchanges.

· Resolve missing equipment. Co-ordinates with vendors the delivery, installation, and training of new equipment.

· Oversee and co-ordinates critical alarm information updates and keeps record of equipment.

Purchasing and Reconciliation

· Creates orders in HNS purchase database, and resolves purchasing issue.

· Work with vendors to get the best pricing for all lab supplies and equipment.

· Responsible for tracking all shipments and supplies for business continuity.

· Following up with the vendor or procurement coordinator for the status updates of all open orders.

· Manages all the common supplies in the lab.

Research Operations

· Acts as the sole representative for the Head and Neck Research Department to access the Shepherd Irradiator located in the moat.

· Responsible for training all new personnel in the lab and serves as the go to person for all technical lab experiments' issues.

· Manage the duties of all personnel in all the common shared areas of the department.

· Conduct assigned scientific projects independently.

Other duties as assigned.

Education Required: Bachelor's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.

Experience Required: Five years of experience in scientific or experimental research work. With preferred degree, three years of required experience.

Experience Preferred: Strong background in cell and molecular biology, and strong technical skills. Great experience with human and mammalian cell culture,
