Department Chair, Colon & Rectal Surgery

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is conducting a national search for Chair of the Department of Colon and Rectal Surgery. This leader will establish the vision for, guide the development of faculty in, and oversee all operations and functions in the department. Successful candidates will be an accomplished [physician/physician-scientist/scientist] and proven leader. The Department of Colon and Rectal Surgery is part of the Division of Surgery and the Chair reports to the Division Head.

The Chair of Colon and Rectal Surgery will be charged with leading a nationally recognized department and contributing to the prevention and elimination of cancer, transformative research, and exceptional education.

The department is comprised of 14 faculty positions, including 4 vacant positions, a full complement of inpatient and outpatient advance practice providers, administrative and program leaders, and support staff. As part of the institution's prioritized Colorectal Service Line, the group performs more than 1,100 surgical cases annually in the Texas Medical Center and sees more than 1,100 new patient and consult visits annually across 5 clinic locations. A new Colorectal Center in the Texas Medical Center is expected to be complete by Spring 2025, and the 4 Houston area clinic locations include West Houston, The Woodlands, Sugar Land and League City.

The Chair is responsible for providing leadership and assumes full responsibility for all areas of the department, including, but not limited to, direct patient care; basic, translational, and clinical research within the department; faculty development and evaluation; integration of educational programs; finance and budgeting; and departmental strategic planning that aligns with institutional direction. The Chair inspires professional growth by ensuring career development opportunities and mentorship for department faculty and trainees, as well as fostering a positive work environment that emphasizes collaboration, collegiality, and wellness for all. The Chair will also represent the department, division, and institution in local, regional, state, and national matters.

· 10 years of experience post clinical degree

· M.D. or equivalent degree

· Board certification in General Surgery and either Colon and Rectal Surgery or Complex General Surgical Oncology

· Eligible for unrestricted Texas medical licensure

· Demonstration of clinical excellence and performance

· Administrative experience at a departmental or institutional level

· Proven track record of successful and independent clinical or translational research and grant or protocol funding

· Consistent record of contributions to education or training and to mentoring of trainees, faculty, or staff

· Progressive leadership experience in an academic setting, preferred experience in an oncologic setting

· Ability to function effectively in a matrix organization characterized by complex intra- and inter- disciplinary relationships
