Clinical Development Specialist - Main Operating Room

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's of Nursing, five years of OR nursing experience, and three years of clinical education experience to include curriculum and competencies development.

Key Functions

General Responsibilities
  • Serves as an expert in OR patient care
  • Assesses educational needs utilizing safety and quality metrics
  • Participates in OR performance improvement initiatives
  • Supports Perioperative Related Committees such as Shared Governance
  • Assists in coordinating periodic emergency mocks and simulations

Clinical Resource
  • Remains current in clinically relevant practice and national OR standards such as AORN
  • Rounds frequently in the OR serving as a key resource for staff regarding policy/practice/ standards/competency
  • Communicates weekly with Nurse Managers and clinical experts regarding practice/ competency issues and learning needs of employees including those with development/education plans

Orientation of Employees
  • Collaborates with the Unit Educator the clinical orientation of OR employees
  • Develops and assesses orientation competencies of OR employees
  • Collaborates with management team and appropriate clinical experts to select appropriate coaches for OR new employees
  • Uses feedback and new employee assessment data to design individualized learning plan for orientees.
  • Works with coaches and management team to routinely monitor and document progress of learner activities.
  • Provides coaching and development for clinical coaches

OR Residency/Internship Program
  • Manages the RN Residents throughout the program establishing expectations of behavior, performance and attendance
  • Participates in selection of candidates for RN Residency program
  • Assists in the administration of the Periop 101 Course for the RN Resident Program
  • Develops curriculum and calendar for the RN Resident Program
  • Coordinates labs and clinical experiences for RN Residents / ST interns.
  • Coordinates certain classroom activities with Education Instructor
  • Organizes guest lecturers/representatives, as well as, provides direct instruction for certain classesEvaluates progress/performance of residents/interns
  • Meets regularly with clinical experts, managers, coaches and learners to discuss progress

Continuing Education
  • Identifies potential CE offerings for OR employees.
  • Collaborates with Education Instructor in the implementation of CE Offerings..


Inservice Education
  • Manages weekly inservices for OR employees
  • Provides responsive just-in-time inservice education
  • Ensures all documentation and attendance records of Inservice Education offerings are maintained.
  • Provides access to inservice presentations to all OR staff

Competency Assessment
  • Utilizes aggregate competency and quality data to design appropriate strategies to address competency issues
  • Works with Education Instructor to ensure all organizational/Nursing Division competency requirements are met.
  • Develops core role-specific employee competencies for OR.
  • Coordinates annual clinical competency assessment strategies in collaboration with clinical experts, management team and education instructor.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
Required: Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursingPreferred: Bachelor's degree in Nursing.

Experience
Required: Five years of registered nursing experience.
Preferred: Five years registered nursing experience in a perioperative setting to include two years of experience with staff development, training, coaching or formal clinical education experience

Certification/Licensure
Required: Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN). Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
Preferred: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area. Any of the following: Board certified (RN-BC) in Professional Development by the American Credentialing Center. Certified as an Oncology certified Nurse (OCN) by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation.
