Ophthalmic Technician

Summary

Conducts various tests and assists with all aspects of diagnostic evaluation of ophthalmic patients.

Job Function

Impacts the care received by ophthalmic patients.
  • Records the ophthalmic history of the patient.
  • Performs the preliminary assessment and recording of visual acuity, color vision testing, schirmer testing, visual field exams, ocular motility, pupil assessment and refraction.
  • Provides ophthalmic surgical assistance in the clinic procedure room.
  • Performs Humphrey visual testing and various types of eye photography to include fluorescein angiography.
  • Assumes responsibility for the maintenance and care of the equipment and surgical instruments.
  • Ensures adequate levels of supplies.
  • Serves as a mentor/instructor to ophthalmic assistants in patient care and proper use of equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Education

Required: High school graduation or equivalent.

Experience

Required: Five years related experience.

License/Certification

All of the following: Upon Hire: Certified as an Ophthalmic Technician (COT) from the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology and Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
