Research Laboratory Manager - Cancer Biology

SUMMARY
The primary purpose of the Research Laboratory Manager position is to plan and implement activities within a research laboratory. This role may also provide supervision and technical management of laboratory operations, while conducting laboratory research projects.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Research Activities
  • Organize and perform technical laboratory duties.
  • Conduct experiments as outlined by the principal investigator.
  • Participate in the development and revision of technical protocols.
  • Maintain the quality and timeliness of all research laboratory operations within budgetary guidelines. Manage workflow, administrative issues, operations, and strategic planning.
  • Ensure procedures and protocols are maintained to guarantee the quality and integrity of tasks performed.
  • Monitor workflow, including the need for supplies, equipment maintenance, and stock solutions preparation.
  • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of various laboratory equipment and apparatus and be able to read equipment operation manuals and procedure manuals.
  • Supervise technical personnel and trainees.
  • Train and oversee new technicians and laboratory personnel in proper laboratory techniques, equipment usage, and safety procedures.
  • Explain the scientific protocols currently being employed in the laboratory.
  • Maintain clear and open lines of communication with co-workers.
  • Serve as a resource for training and current protocol information.
  • Perform research projects and prepare written reports for the principal investigator.

Laboratory Regulatory Compliance and Safety Activities
  • Ensure laboratory compliance with accrediting agency regulations.
  • Supervise the overall appearance of the laboratory and ensure supplies and materials are stored properly.
  • Oversee the daily maintenance of all common laboratory equipment, supervise the upkeep and organization of common equipment areas, and ensure proper use and care of equipment.
  • Define and develop reports according to laboratory needs. Use laboratory expertise to identify and resolve operational issues and interact with both internal and external sources to resolve problems. Modify or develop new techniques as necessary.
  • Demonstrate and adhere to laboratory safety precautions.
  • Provide verbal and written instructions to lab personnel on standards and specialized safety procedures.
  • Develop new safety protocols as needed.
  • Attend annual safety courses required by MDACC and other necessary trainings.
  • Maintain and update laboratory safety notebooks (MSDS, Emergency Plan, Radiation Certificates, Safety Plan, Isotope Disposal, Wipe Tests, Chemical Hygiene Plan, Radiation Plan).

Inventory Control and Purchasing Activities
  • Visually monitor inventories of consumable common supplies and replace depleted items promptly to ensure continuity in lab experimental procedures.
  • Review requests for new supplies and implement purchases when necessary.

Other Duties
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Education Required:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Seven years of experience in scientific, research, or clinical laboratory, including four years in a supervisory/managerial capacity.
  • With a preferred degree, five years of required experience, including four years in a supervisory/managerial capacity.

Experience Requirements:
  • Seven years of experience in scientific, research, or clinical laboratory, including four years in a supervisory/managerial capacity. With a preferred degree, five years of required experience, including four years in a supervisory/managerial capacity.
  • Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate and/or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience. Completion of both programs can substitute for a maximum of two years of supervisory or management experience.
  • Must pass the pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
