Payroll Specialist

The mission of The University of Texas M. D. We are seeking a Payroll Specialist with extensive experience in multistate payroll processing, including in-depth knowledge of state payroll taxes. The ideal candidate must have significant hands-on experience with PeopleSoft and Dimensions, as well as expertise in managing garnishments and ensuring payroll compliance.

The Payroll Specialist will be responsible for preparing and processing all aspects of the biweekly payroll. The Payroll Specialist ensures that our payroll system adheres to federal, state, and local tax laws, as well as labor regulations. Staying abreast of changes in legislation that may affect payroll, such as tax rate adjustments or new benefits entitlements. Their role is crucial in mitigating risk and avoiding costly penalties by maintaining compliance and conducting regular audits of payroll practices.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Customer Service
Provide effective customer service to employees in person, on the phone and email. Complete customer service request (CRM) within established timeframes. To include but not limited to - Understanding your paystub, Kronos, the exception week process, direct deposit, withholding and any other item that impacts an employee's paycheck.

Compliance Responsible for ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and best practices. Staying updated on new tax laws and payroll regulations to ensure compliance. Provide expertise and recommendations for compliance and process improvements.

Payroll Processing Process On-cycles and off-cycle payrolls for the Biweekly pay group. Calculate retroactive payments. Process accrual payouts for monthly paid employees and ensure that the terminated employees applicable accrual balances are set to zero. Process employees' leave of absence actions. Process employees Returning from Leave and verify that the employee has been paid correctly during their leave of absence status, including salaries, fringe benefits, taxes and other deductions.

Termination Payout/Leave of Absence Processes termination accruals payout and employees' leave of absence. Process employees Returning From Leave and verify that the employee has been paid correctly during their leave of absence status. Ensures all leave recorded is adjusted in the balances before final payout.

Misc. Ensure Payroll Office Procedures are documented and updated, as needed. Image payroll documents in a timely manner. Assist with project testing, as assigned.

Education
Required: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience
Required: Four years of payroll or accounting experience. With preferred degree, two years of required experience.

Preferred: Preferred candidates will have extensive experience managing complex payroll systems for large, multistate workforces, including a thorough understanding of varying state payroll tax laws. Additional experience with other payroll software and resolving payroll discrepancies is highly desirable.
