Clinical Nurse - Main Operating Room (OR) Nursing

Perioperative Services strives to be the safest perioperative environment in the world, to have the highest quality of perioperative outcomes, and to demonstrate the core values in our vision. Partnered with Anesthesiology and Critical Care, the Division of Nursing and the Division of Surgery, this multidisciplinary team performs more than 15,000 surgical cases each year in more than 30 operating rooms spanning the Main Building and Mays Clinic.

The Clinical Nurse in the Operating Room must have at least one year of nursing experience in the Operating Room.

Transformational Leadership: Leads the patient care team in providing high-quality care in the operating room.
  • Organizes and prioritizes work to ensure efficient patient flow and teamwork.
  • Ensures continuity of care through effective discharge planning, patient education, and coordination of services.
  • Practices autonomously within the scope of professional nursing practice.

Structural Empowerment: Demonstrates empowerment to solve problems and contribute to unit goals.
  • Actively participates in shared decision-making at the unit level.
  • Identifies barriers to patient care and develops solutions to improve workflow.
  • Builds strong relationships with colleagues to enhance patient outcomes.

Exemplary Professional Practice: Shows expertise in nursing care specific to the operating room environment.
  • Provides direct patient care, ensures safety, and efficiently manages resources.
  • Functions effectively in roles such as charge nurse or preceptor when needed.
  • Demonstrates clinical competency in surgical procedures, sterile technique, and emergency management.
  • Collaborates with the surgical team to assess, plan, and evaluate patient care.
  • Acts as a patient advocate, upholding patient rights and ensuring comfort.

New Knowledge, Innovation, and Improvements: Incorporates evidence-based practices to improve patient care.
  • Participates in or leads initiatives to enhance OR processes.
  • Engages in continuous learning and applies research findings to the OR setting.

Empirical Quality Results: Ensures safety and quality standards are met in the operating room.
  • Adheres to safety protocols and minimizes risks.
  • Reports incidents and contributes to quality improvement efforts.
  • Documents patient care in alignment with established standards.

Other Duties as Assigned

Education
Required: Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.

Experience
No experience required. All clinical nurses with less than one year registered nurse (RN) work experience will be required to participate in the Clinical Nurse Residency Program.

Licensure/Certification
Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN). Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification if working in the following department: Nrsg Post Anesthesia Care Unit (600160).
