Department Chair, GI Radiation Oncology

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is conducting a national search for Chair of the Department of Gastrointestinal Radiation Oncology. This leader will establish the vision for, guide the development of faculty in, and oversee all operations and functions in the department. Successful candidates will be an accomplished [physician/physician-scientist/scientist] and proven leader. The Department of Gastrointestinal Radiation Oncology is part of the Division of Radiation Oncology and the Chair reports to the Division Head.

The Chair of Gastrointestinal Radiation Oncology will be charged with leading a nationally recognized department and contributing to the prevention and elimination of cancer, transformative research, and exceptional education.

The Chair of Gastrointestinal Radiation Oncology will be charged with leading a nationally recognized department and contributing to the prevention and elimination of cancer, transformative research, and exceptional education. The clinical facilities incorporate the most advanced radiotherapy and imaging technologies such as proton therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, magnetic resonance imaging guided linear accelerator (MRI-LINAC), brachytherapy, stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) also referred to as stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR). In addition, multiple other promising technologies, including FLASH radiotherapy, are being developed at the pre-clinical and early-clinical stage. The GIRO department has faculty physician scientists who have robust, extramurally funded research programs that include, basic, translational, and clinical research initiatives. Since becoming a department, its research funding portfolio has increased 190% to approximately $4 million, with funding from federal and state sponsors as well as industry strategic alliances. The faculty are Principal Investigators in clinical trials within MD Anderson and across our Cancer Network. Our clinical research program comprises 37 clinical research protocols, encompassing non-therapeutic and therapeutic studies, with additional protocols awaiting activation.

The Chair is responsible for providing leadership and assumes full responsibility for all areas of the department, including, but not limited to, direct patient care; basic, translational, and clinical research within the department; faculty development and evaluation; integration of educational programs; finance and budgeting; and departmental strategic planning that aligns with institutional direction. The Chair inspires professional growth by ensuring career development opportunities and mentorship for department faculty and trainees, as well as fostering a positive work environment that emphasizes collaboration, collegiality and wellness for all. The Chair will also represent the department, division and institution in local, regional, state, and national matters.

Qualifications

· 10 years of experience post clinical degree

· M.D. or equivalent degree

· Board certification in Texas Medical Board

· Eligible for unrestricted Texas medical licensure

· Demonstration of clinical excellence and performance

· Administrative experience at a departmental or institutional level

· Proven track record of successful and independent clinical or translational research and grant or protocol funding

· Consistent record of contributions to education or training and to mentoring of trainees, faculty, or staff

· Progressive leadership experience in an academic setting, preferred experience in an oncologic setting

· Ability to function effectively in a matrix organization characterized by complex intra- and inter- disciplinary relationships
