Research Nurse - GI Medical Oncology - Research

The Research Nurse - Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology Research role at UT MD Anderson supports the mission by advancing clinical research and delivering high-quality patient care within specialized oncology trials.

The Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology department focuses on innovative treatment protocols and clinical trials for patients with gastrointestinal cancers, including cancers of the liver, bile duct, gallbladder, pancreas, large and small bowel, stomach, esophagus and rare tumors. The Research Nurse - Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology Research plays a critical role in coordinating patient care, managing clinical trial protocols, and ensuring compliance with research standards. The Research Nurse - Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology Research collaborates closely with physicians, patients, and multidisciplinary teams to support clinical trial execution and patient outcomes.

The ideal candidate will hold a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, bring experience in clinical research and oncology nursing, maintain active licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas, and Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), along with preferred advanced certifications such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification (PALS).

The salary range for this position is: Minimum $77,500 - Midpoint $97,000 - Maximum $116,500

Responsibilities

Assessment
• Screen patients for protocol eligibility through detailed review and analysis of charts and clinical data.
• Assess inpatients and outpatients for participation in clinical trials.
• Identify patient and family education needs related to treatment and follow-up protocols.
• Identify and coordinate nursing staff in-service education on clinical trial protocols.
• Administer protocol-specific surveys to patients.
• Access physical records requiring visual acuity and occasional bending or lifting of documents up to ten pounds.

Intervention
• Coordinate and monitor patient treatment within clinical trial protocols.
• Schedule diagnostic tests before, during, and after treatment phases.
• Administer investigational and standard medications per protocol requirements.
• Obtain pharmacology and laboratory specimens for research purposes.
• Monitor patient responses during treatment and conduct protocol-directed follow-up.
• Educate patients and families on medication administration and potential side effects.
• Provide in-service education to nursing and technical staff on clinical trial management.
• Execute research study designs including single- and double-blind studies.
• Collect blood samples using venipuncture techniques following institutional procedures.
• Maintain accurate records in the endoscopy database as required by the primary investigator.

Evaluation
• Monitor and collaborate with physicians to evaluate patient response to protocol treatments.
• Determine tumor response based on protocol guidelines.
• Grade toxicities according to established protocol criteria.
• Utilize personal protective equipment when handling hazardous substances.
• Report toxicities and adverse drug reactions to sponsors and the Institutional Review Board.
• Enter research data into the Protocol Data Management System or case report forms.
• Assist physicians in evaluating clinical trial data outcomes.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

EDUCATION
• Required: Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
• Preferred: Bachelor's Degree Nursing.

WORK EXPERIENCE
• Required: One year Registered nurse experience.
• Preferred: Prior Research Nurse and/or Oncology experience.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
• Required: RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN). Upon Hire
• Required: BLS - Basic Life Support or CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation Upon Hire
• Preferred: ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification as required by patient care area. Upon Hire
• Preferred: PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification as required by patient care area. Upon Hire
