Assistant Nurse Manager - Clinical and Translational Research Center

The Clinical and Translational Research Center (CTRC) spearheads more than 700 cutting-edge clinical trials, spanning across 22 departments at any given time, and is the dedicated MD Anderson site for complex, biologically based new drug development. With its 41-bed treatment room nursing area and adjacent full-function laboratory, the 12,660 square foot facility is an ideal location to perform intensive clinical trials with a focus on first-in-man, Phase I and Phase II studies with rigorous time points and pharmacologic testing.

The ideal candidate will have a master's degree in nursing and at least three years of clinical nursing experience, including at least two years of oncology/chemotherapy infusion, research nursing, and two years of people supervisory or management experience. Must have the ability to effectively communicate and deal with crisis management while working well under pressure.

Summary
The primary purpose of the Assistant Nurse Manager position is to manage nursing personnel and operations in order to provide safe, efficient, and therapeutically effective patient care and customer service in the outpatient setting. Assists the nurse manager in the achievement of the unit administrative, financial, clinical research and strategic goals

1. Transformational Leadership: ANM must lead and develop other (co-workers, patients, families and significant others) to where the need to be in order to meet the demands of their future needs.
a. Implements and monitors unit budget to respond in a cost effective manner to changing patient, staff and multidisciplinary team requirements and strengthen unit.
b. Assist in preparation and delivery of unit staffing plans considering skill mix, staff and patient care requirements. Analyzes plans for compliance with established budget.
c. Assures continuity of care as patients' transition across the continuum through appropriate discharge planning, patient education and coordination of services.
d. Practice with autonomy within the scope of professional nursing.

2. Structural Empowerment: ANM empowers staff to problem solve in order to meet organizational and unit goals and achieve desired outcomes.
a. Helps manage human resource activities for all clinical and clerical staff including recruitment, retention, supervision evaluation and productivity.
b. Participates in identifying, recruiting, developing and retaining top talent through effective communication, performance management, career counseling, and conflict resolution.
c. Participates as active member in shared governance model at unit and institutional level.
d. Accountable for identifying barriers to patient car and solutions.
e. Active in developing strong relationships and partnerships within and across the organizational to improve patient outcomes.

3. Exemplary Professional Practice: ANM has a comprehensive understanding of the role of professional nursing in the institution and motivates staff to perform at the highest level.
a. Trains, coaches and assists team members to ensure optimum patient care and efficient use of resources.
b. Accountable for the management and provision of patient care in assigned area.
c. Effectively and consistently functional in related roles as required: i.e. charge nurse, clinical coach, preceptor, protocol manager.
d. Demonstrates clinical competency and compassion in providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures and managing emergencies.
e. Assesses patient's needs for nursing care and other services.
f. Collaborates with physicians, other services, patient and patient's family to plan care and evaluate outcomes.
g. Provide direct care to patients approximately 50% of the time.

4. New Knowledge, Innovation, and Improvement: ANM encourages and supports the integration of innovation and research based findings into daily patient care practices.
a. Actively participates in, assists and/or leads unit, divisional and/or institutional improvement projects. Communicates information to appropriate individuals.
b. Promotes innovative solutions by encouraging innovation in others.
c. Improves practice by integrating results and theories of research studies.
d. Participates in/leads evidence based practice projects.
e. Participates in the redesign of care delivery for unit/center patient population.
f. Attends site initiates visit, provide input for protocol activate.
g. Participates in the utilization of ARMADA/Lab Tracker system
h. Support activation and implantation of new protocols in CTRC to facilitate new drug development.

5. Empirical Quality Results: ANM promotes employees to seek solutions to problems inherent in our institution rather than creating a workaround.
a. Assumes leadership role in managing the quality of services provided at the unit level, across the care delivery continuum and within the larger organization.
b. Ensures integration of safety and quality standards into practice and delivery of team care.
c. Recognizes and takes action to prevent as risk behavior i.e., non-adherence to policy, standards of care, practice.
d. Collaborates with others in quality and performance improvement efforts.

EDUCATION
Required: Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Preferred: Master's of Science in Nursing.

EXPERIENCE
Required: Three years of clinical nursing experience. Successful completion of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center New Graduate Nurse Residency Program can be substituted for two of the three required years of clinical nursing experience.
Preferred: At least two years of oncology/chemotherapy infusion. At least two years of supervisory or management experience.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION
Required: Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN). Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
Preferred: Certification in Oncology, American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
