The Advanced Practice Provider, Plastic Surgery role is an integral part of the Department of Plastic Surgery at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, supporting a high-volume, academically driven clinical service dedicated to comprehensive cancer care and innovative reconstructive surgery. The department includes 32 surgeons performing more than 4,000 surgeries annually, including over 1,000 micro-reconstructive procedures, and provides extensive inpatient, consultative, and outpatient services for post-treatment care.
The Advanced Practice Provider,
Plastic Surgery contributes directly to the mission of UT MD Anderson by delivering advanced inpatient postsurgical care with a high level of independence while collaborating closely with surgeons, fellows, and interdisciplinary teams. The Advanced Practice Provider, Plastic Surgery supports complex clinical operations, facilitates continuity of care, and ensures high-quality outcomes for patients undergoing plastic and reconstructive surgical procedures. The ideal candidate will have prior experience in plastic surgery or post surgical practice and is a clinically strong and patient-centered advanced practice provider with the ability to manage complex inpatient postsurgical care with increasing independence, apply advanced assessment skills, collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, and deliver care in accordance with institutional policies, medical staff standards, and Texas state regulations.
Salary Range: Minimum $117,500.00 - Midpoint $146,500.00 - Maximum $176,500.00

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Inpatient Clinical Care
Provide quality inpatient postsurgical patient care based on prescribed diagnosis, treatment plan, age, development, and identified needs
Perform comprehensive patient assessments, monitor laboratory values, and document findings accurately in the electronic health record
Communicate physical findings and pertinent clinical information to attending physicians and associated medical staff in a timely manner
Anticipate and address complex physiologic and psychologic patient problems using advanced assessment skills specific to Plastic Surgery
Documentation and Medical Records
Write progress notes, orders, evaluations, and summaries that are accurate, clear, complete, and compliant with Medical Records standards
Complete dictations and written documentation in a timely, thorough, and well-organized manner
Document diagnostic and therapeutic procedures according to institutional policies
Procedures and Patient Education
Perform wound care, dressing changes, debridement, drain and suture removal, and other procedures as directed by supervising physicians
Provide patient and family education related to wound care, diet, activity, and recovery expectations
Gather appropriate data and policy information prior to performing procedures
Care Coordination and Communication
Facilitate communication between patients, families, physicians, and interdisciplinary care teams
Notify and coordinate with allied health professionals such as speech pathology and radiology as indicated
Assist patients and families with questions, concerns, and support needs throughout hospitalization
Inpatient Operations and Discharge Planning
Receive daily sign-out from fellows and physician assistants and follow up on patient care issues
Round on first assist cases and monitor flap-related issues on inpatient units
Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient lists and document billable encounters in the EHR
Assist with discharge planning, including discharge summaries, prescriptions, medication reconciliation, follow-up appointments, and home health arrangements
Complete discharge summaries within 24 hours and route for co-signature
Assist in the operating room when inpatient duties are complete, with availability to return to patient care needs as required
REQUIRED: Degree requirements as defined by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) as required for clinical licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant.
Licensure/Certification
REQUIRED: Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant. Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population. Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification. MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas.
PREFERRED: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area
