Assistant Chief of Police

The mission of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.

The primary purpose of the Assistant Chief position is to provide the necessary management skills to assist in the direction of the university police department. Assists the Chief of Police in the development, administration, coordination and implementation of departmental policies, procedures and activities.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Leadership and Administration
Develops and implements departmental goals, objectives, and policies. Ensures all standards are met, policies and procedures are adhered to, and accountability at all levels is occurring.

Meetings and Representation
Commands and controls major investigations, emergency management situations, and large university special events. Represents the police department at meetings, conferences, and other events.

Management Tasks
Assists the Chief of Police with discipline, hiring decisions, and organizational structure. Assumes command of the department in the absence of the Chief of Police.

Other Duties as Assigned
Other duties to include, but not limited to, emergency recall and/or may be required to remain onsite or work extended hours during man-made or natural disasters and unusual occurrences on campus. Local or long-distance travel may be required for training or other business purposes occasionally.

REQUIREMENTS

Required Education: Bachelor's Level Degree

Preferred Education: Master's Level Degree

Required Certification: Texas Peace Officer License within 180 days of entry into job; Advanced Certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement; and Valid Class C Texas Driver's License.

Required Experience: Ten years of increasingly responsible broad-based experience as a commissioned police officer with a recognized law enforcement agency with four years of management and command-level responsibility. Experience making complex administrative and operational decisions. Proven ability to educate, persuade and work collaboratively within a culturally diverse setting. Public speaking and policy development experience. Demonstrated experience in employee performance management and staff development. Proven ability in program and project development and implementation. Ability to effect organizational change and improvement.
Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Experience: Experience and knowledge in the areas of event management, homeland security, risk management, emergency management, dignitary protection and physical security in a campus environment.
