SUMMARY
The primary purpose of the Medical Assistant position is to act as a lead assistant in preparing patients for Mohs surgery, follow up, consultation and new patient appointments and to assist with procedures. Medical Assistants perform direct patient
care in a dynamic, high volume environment. There is involvement in all technical aspects of Mohs surgery and other dermatological procedures to ensure continuity of care and maximum efficiency of the area. Consistently demonstrates appropriate knowledge of basic procedural instruments and supplies specific to Mohs & Dermasurgery. Work includes sterilization of surgical instruments and sterile preparation of surgical trays. Appropriately and accurately utilizes institutional information systems to obtain patient information, collect and document biopsy specimens, pertinent patient medical information for MD/Clinical Nurse review. Gives post procedure patient education according to the planned procedure. Effectively and efficiently provides assistance to the Mohs and Dermasurgey multidisciplinary team with procedures, room turnover, inventory management, and stocking.
The ideal candidate will be a Certified or Registered Medical Assistant and have at least one year of experience with surgical procedures, a background in Mohs and or dermatology.
Shift: Monday - Friday 8:30am-5pm with late shifts

a. Responsibilities include completion of routine or advanced patient care assignments,
including scrubbing with Mohs surgeon as delegated.
b. Understands critical changes to patient status and reports concerns to appropriate
nursing staff and physicians.
c. Works with multidisciplinary team members to identify and address patient care needs.
d. Effectively and professionally resolves conflict with team members, provides and
receives timely feedback to ensure collaboration and positively impact patient care and
patient satisfaction scores.
e. Participates in team and peer evaluations.
f. Demonstrates superior customer service in all interactions with patients, families,
visitors, and colleagues.
Effective Communication:
a. Effectively and professionally resolves conflict with team members, provides and
receives timely feedback to ensure collaboration and positively impact patient care and
patient satisfaction scores.

c. Demonstrates superior customer service in all interactions with patients, families,
visitors, and colleagues.
Assists with Patient Care:
Aids in completion of activities of daily living, mobilization, greeting,
rooming/discharging and securing vitals in a diverse patient setting.
b. Assists with patient examination and/or treatments, utilizing age appropriate care.
c. Circulates and replenish surgical suites and exam rooms during and after procedures.
d. Set up equipment and assemble surgical trays for Mohs procedures, excision
procedures, CO2 laser procedures, biopsy trays and liquid nitrogen
Work Environment and Systems Work Environment:
a. Maintains environment in a clean, safe, and orderly manner.
b. Maintains unit and institutional competencies and adheres to legal and regulatory
requirements.
c. Sterile processing of surgical instruments in a timely manner, and doing so in an
efficient and safe environment.
d. Adherence to OSHA standards/performing patient care under sterile technique.
e. Order supplies as needed, keeping management abreast of the necessary items to be ordered by the Administrative Assistant.
e. Participates in unit projects focused on improving patient outcomes.
Systems:
a. Demonstrates knowledge and utilization of computers, equipment, and software
programs to enter patient data, access information, and communicate with the
multidisciplinary team.
b. Successfully complete required on-line training.
c. Demonstrate accountability by reviewing electronic/written communication from the
Division of Nursing and MDACC.

EDUCATION
Required: High school diploma/equivalent.
Preferred: Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant program or US Military medical services training program.
EXPERIENCE
Required: One year of medical assistant experience. With preferred degree, no experience is required.
Preferred: One year of experience in dermatology, Mohs or surgical procedures, and previous knowledge of sterilization and disinfection processes.
CERTIFICATION
Required: None
Preferred: Certified by one of the following based on Medical Assistant experience or preferred education: Certified by one of the following based on Medical Assistant experience or preferred education:
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) by the American Society of Medical Technologists (AMT)

National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
